Discrete Absorption Components from 3-D spot models of hot star winds

چکیده

Abstract The winds of hot, massive stars are variable from processes happening on both large and small spatial scales. A particular case such wind variability is ‘discrete-absorption components’ (DACs) that manifest themselves as outward moving density features in UV resonance line spectra. Such DACs believed to be caused by large-scale spiral-shaped structures the stellar wind. We consider novel 3-D radiation-hydrodynamic models rotating hot star study emergence co-rotating spiral due a local (pseudo-)magnetic spot surface. Subsequently, hydrodynamic used retrieve DAC spectral signatures synthetic spectra created short-characteristics radiative transfer code.

Hydrodynamical Simulations of Corotating Interaction Regions and Discrete Absorption Components in Rotating O-Star Winds

We present two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of corotating stream structure in the wind from a rotating O star, together with resulting synthetic line profiles showing discrete absorption components (DACs). An azimuthal variation is induced by a local increase or decrease in the radiative driving force, as would arise from a bright or dark “star spot” in the equatorial plane. Since muc...

Spectral Modeling of X-rays from Hot Star Winds

We attempt to determine the mass-loss rates of several O stars using x-ray spectra from Chandra’s archive. Models of x-ray production in hot star winds predict broad, asymmetric emission lines, but observed lines tend to be much more symmetric. Such symmetry can be explained by either lowering the values of the mass-loss rate for these winds, or by reassessing the commonly accepted models of x-...

Mass loss from inhomogeneous hot star winds I. Resonance line formation in 2D models

Context. The mass-loss rate is a key parameter of hot, massive stars. Small-scale inhomogeneities (clumping) in the winds of these stars are conventionally included in spectral analyses by assuming optically thin clumps, a void inter-clump medium, and a smooth velocity field. To reconcile investigations of different diagnostics (in particular, unsaturated UV resonance lines vs. Hα/radio emissio...

A Simple Scaling Analysis of X-ray Emission and Absorption in Hot-star Winds

We present a simple analysis of X-ray emission and absorption for hot-star winds, designed to explore the natural scalings of the observed X-ray luminosity with wind and stellar properties. We show that an exospheric approximation, in which all of the emission above the optical depth unity radius escapes the wind, reproduces very well the formal solution for radiation transport through a spheri...

Modelling the clumping-induced polarimetric variability of hot star winds

Context. Clumping in the winds of massive stars may significantly reduce empirical mass-loss rates, and which in turn may have a large impact on our understanding of massive star evolution. Aims. Here, we investigate wind-clumping through the linear polarization induced by light scattering off the clumps. Methods. Through the use of an analytic wind clumping model, we predict the time evolution...
